In June of 1944, the Prime Minister of the New York Underworld, Frank Costello took a short cab ride. When he exited the cab, he left behind two envelopes containing $27,200.00 in hundreds and fifties. Edward Waters, the honest cabbie, found the envelope and turned it into the NY police. After the story hit the papers, Costello made a claim alleging this was his money and it was from a debt he collected from a friend. A court case followed. In the end, Costello only retrieved $120 of the original amount.
