In August of 1961, Joe Profaci gunmen killed Joseph “Joe Jelly” Gioielli, Crazy Joe Gallo’s top enforcer. Jelly simply disappeared one day. Several days later his topcoat wrapped with fish inside was thrown from a moving car outside of the Gallo headquarters. Mob lore is that Jelly was taken out on a fishing boat with Salvatore “Sally” D’Ambrosio and Carmine “The Snake” Persico under the ruse that the three would go deep sea fishing, but only two came back alive. Joe Jelly’s murder was responsible for one of the great movie scenes from “The Godfather,” in which Luca Brasi is said to be sleeping with the fishes.
