From the mid 1980’s through 2000, the Bufalino crime family couriers, active in Northeastern Pennsylvania, were transporting cash in an elaborate and organized fashion in which rental cars were used to drive to pre-selected pickup locations.
Cash-filled bags would be placed in cars and dropped off usually at truck stops off major highways. Couriers were paid up to $10,000 a week and were told to “get gas” if there was a pickup at the stop or “something to eat” if the pickup was inside the restaurant. Often bags would contain as much as $200,000 in $50 and $100 bills.
