One summer in Philadelphia, Gino’s Cafe, a local mob hangout, sponsored a softball team in a local neighborhood league. It was unlike any other softball team ever assembled outside of prison walls. Gino’s Cafe attracted a large following. But these mobsters could play ball. They won more often than they lost, and sometimes they won big. After one blowout, someone suggested they should call themselves “the hit men.”
Not everyone laughed.
At most games, the FBI and the Philadelphia Police Department had cameramen in the stands.
