Joe “Socks” Lanza didn’t get his nickname because he wore special hosiery. “Socks” referred to his oversized mitts. Socks Lanza had enormous hands and when he delivered the full weight of his body into a punch, the target suffered devastating consequences. Lanza didn’t climb his way to the top of Fulton Fish Market, he socked anyone who got in his way, disagreed with him or was foolish enough to make him mad.
