One of Chicago’s most enduring Prohibition legends claims that jazz pianist Thomas “Fats” Waller was unexpectedly taken by gangsters to perform at one of Al Capone’s birthday celebrations. While historians debate some of the finer details, the story has been repeated for decades by jazz historians and Waller’s family. According to the legend, the frightened pianist soon realized he wasn’t in danger at all—he had simply been hired to entertain one of America’s most infamous gangsters.
