During the production of The Godfather (1971), Colombo crime family boss Joseph Colombo and the Italian-American Civil Rights League publicly protested the film’s portrayal of Italians. Paramount agreed to remove the words “Mafia” and “Cosa Nostra” from the script. The terms do not appear in the finished movie. Despite the concession, the film went on to define public perception of organized crime for generations.
